What's the story?
A well priced lunch menu went pretty well for us at Ninja Ramen.

The set lunch menu varies on a daily basis, so, for a Friday, we took both starters, mains and tried two of the three offered ice cream flavours.

Karaage was excellently flavoured, if a couple of chickeny chunks light. A fabulous, creamy spicy dipping sauce came with it. Very enjoyable stuff.

Should you dump the dumpling? Not here. The Gyozas were a satisfying second starter. Four of them seems right, portion wise. Again, excellent flavours as everything felt very freshly prepared. We weren't sure how they got burnt on the bottom, but these things happen to the best of us. If in doubt, turn the other cheek.

Chicken rice was our first main - confusingly arriving before the Gyozas. A hearty dish this one, with lots of flavours which didn't fade with repeated mouthfuls - a good job well done, then. A large onion quotient means it's a sweetish savoury dish and  a very healthy portion size. Consistent flavour notwithstanding this is one plate of food where extra condiments would have been good for a bit of flavour manipulation.

Only disappointment of the day, and we were surprised, was Chicken ramen. It looked very pretty, but was surprisingly blandly flavoured - to the point it felt like an ingredient had gone missing in the preparation.

The broth proved the point, ladled on its own the colour and flavour were closer to a prepared chicken soup than you would hope for. After the freshness and energy of the other dishes, the tired tone here was a big contrast.

Desserts are never going to have you leaping about in set menus, but credit to NR for unconventional ice-creams. Red bean was mild, but the sweetness came through eventually. Perhaps this was our fault for kicking off with Sesame, which is a bold flavour choice, but worked superbly. Both felt like someone had taken care in making them. Good work. Green tea was on offer too.

Decor is urban, but also homely. Entry is into the streetmarket zone, where Deckard could easily be ordering his 2019-flavoured noodles in the slightly steamy atmosphere. Up some steps and it's into someone's front room. Furniture is on the small side and won't encourage you to linger longer than lunch, but table spacing is fine. Service is excellent with good eye contact and waiter radar. Extra drinks arrived on the server's return trip, which is very pleasing.

A good value lunch, with a different combination of dishes each day, we reckon it's a good shop window for the main menu. A return visit to delve deeper beckons.
