What's the story?
Taking you from Friday evening to Monday morning, get ready to see other sides of Madrid. There are no electric scooters, cafes with bicycle bits as furniture or sepia-lit dining rooms here. From card tables in Usera to near-forgotten bars in Malasaña backstreets, there's something here for everyone, we think.

We carried out a scientific experiment, and even our local Madrileño, with a lifetime's experience of the city, hadn't heard of the duck church. Success there, then. Great routes around the Retiro and Rastro are almost a day out in themselves and don't necessarily need a weekend to be enjoyed.

It's not strictly a food guide, but a fair few bars get a mention, including some we've been and seen, such as Mercado San Fernando. And there are a few places here we'll be adding to our to try list.

There's whimsy, history, and a little bit of party-free politics. Most importantly, there's fascination in and love for the subject. And, we can't forget those ducks. You'd be quackers to miss it. Especially as unlike a duck, it's completely free. That's right. No bill.

Researched superbly, written clearly and accessibly, it's an instant addition to our h:m recommended list.
