What's the story?
€3-4 per person for breakfast incl coffee.
Right then. Let's kick off with some flour power. Finding a bakery-cafe on one of Madrid's trendiest streets is no surprise. If they'd called if Levadura Malasaña they'd not have been far off the mark, either.

Coffee

Filament bulbs? Tick. Big table? Double tick, as it's a tree trunk in three bits surrounded by bicycle chain-fitted stools, lord help us. There's serious baking going on and the air is thick with floury aromas.

Excellent muffins. Plumping for lemon and poppyseed was not a disappointment. Big, lemony it was not, even nearly, a cupcake. Excellent.

For the Iberian-inspired, two excellent slices of wholemeal bread came with freshly splatted tomato, with bonus points for an unbidden offer of a refill, if required. Excellent oil was on the table. HK approved.

So, food-wise we went away pleased. The coffee was good too, but the caffe con leche was a bit small for my liking, and there's only one size on offer. And, good news for the V-minded, they have four kinds of milk on the menu.

And they do bread-making classes which sound like they might be fun. Obviously, they charge. So you need dough to knead the dough.

What's the story?
€2 for caffe latte.
Wandering down Pez, the chance for a live Compare and Contrast was too strong to resist. Okey dokey then.

So, Hanso (Not a lopsided Star Wars reference. It's all java not jawas). Lots of Macs. Significant beards. Tiny furniture. Really. It's Kindergarten coffee. House elves and contortionists must make a beeline for it.

Caffe lattes the size of cafe con leche, very smooth and moreish with fresh milk, but €2 a go for a small one.  It's less latte, more leche as we shall follow HK's dictum; there's not enough leche to call it a latte. You say leche, I say latte, potato-potahto? Let's call the whole thing off? Nah! the milk most definitely isn't. Credit for more nice fresh stuff.

It's just not comfy, though. Perhaps you'll stay for the wifi. Or the challenge of eating lunch on a plate at knee level. But after 15 mins, the furniture doesn't invite you to linger. Like tables so small your tray is the size of a placemat? Desperate for yet more filament light bulbs? Or hoping a convert to hipsterdom will throw a redundant sock your way and set you free? HanSo is your bag.
