Hopes? Looking for a decent three course menu del día with something to say for itself.
Reality? Mama Campo serves a well-priced and decently prepared elements on all three well-sized courses. But a box-ticking approach to dessert.
First Impressions? A shame the street nearby is being dug up. The noise and dust force us inside. Olavide would normally be a nice place to suit outside. HIgh chairs in the cantina in distressed white paint. Restaurant next door is glossier.
USP? A smart, appealing interior and varied interesting menu in this corner of Chamberi.
The offer in three words? Tasty, polished. Smart.
Eat me! Salads Our starter salads began when seasoned tomatoes turned up, a bit too chilled, but the feta and olive helped season it. Dish 2 felt a bit like salad overload, with the chef apaprently throwing in everything going spare from spinach to confit pear plus the inevitable pomegranate seeds - but it was actually a delicious combination, with an excellent vinagrette. Recommended, this one.

Codillo is not quite what granny used to make, but not that far off. Some nice vinagery, pickled cabbage set the pork off nicely. Also, some excellent, smooth mashed potato added creamy balance. A bit of a classic, all told and excellent value at the price. Roast Beef was another decent one. The beef's just a bit warm (and served well done). On top of that, the spuds are scalloped but certainly roasted. It's a salsa verde to add a bit of freshness rather than a heavy gravy, bit in this climate that's a smart move. Four good dishes out of four so far. This doesn't happen as often as it might.

Brownie was solid enough, but it was lacking in the squidgy, crusty department and possibly warmed from chilled in a microwave. But, it was, solidPastel de Belem Much as a I love a mini custard tart, I feel a poem coming on. Standby.

Nice, but
Not a dessert in my book.
Friend friendly? All the info's there on Mama Campo's menu.
Rating for dating? Restaurant's chi-chi, distressed interior would suit many. As does this menu.
Service? Efficient and timely. But, here's the word-for-word exchange at dessert time.
"And a cafe solo, please."
"Coffee machine's broken."
Spot the softening of the bad news? Exactly. Madrid doesn't say sorry much. We get that. But. come on. Perplexingly, the mystery deepened, when, passing the terrace later, we spotted espresso cups in evidence. Hmmm....
Tip? For efficient delivery. Which was fair, I think. But I didn't want to leave it. So that's a fail.
Change one thing? Everyone has bad days. But a bedside manner isn't a luxury to be without in the service industry. Tough, but that's hospitality.
Revisitability? For lunch, very good. A la carte Mama Campo warrants a try,
