The Story
Hopes? Reliable authentic tapas are not that thick on the ground these days in this neighbourhood. Fingers crossed...
Reality? It's the real deal. Which means big portions, rustic cooking and you won't leave hungry.
First Impressions? Early February and the Xmas lights are still twinkling! Beers and a cheerful multi-generational hubbub. The owner's son pops behind the bar for a minute at one point with colouring pens and paper. It's that kind of place.
USP? Not too many oppotunities to eat Francesinhas with a chilled Superbock around Madrid.
The offer in three words? Iberian home cooking.
Service? It's good. Very relaxed. The kind of place where drinks come instantly, but you might pop over to the bar to pick them up yourself. It might just earn you an extra tapa if you ask nicely...
On tap? Mahou!
Eat me! When if appears, the Paella aperitif is a lot of food for no extra charge. There's lots of broth - caldo, since you ask - which means it'd ideally have a bit more resting time to let those flavours develop more. But, look, it's included. So who's complaning. We're certainly not when the Chicken Wings aperitif arrives, as that's a healthy size too. Arguably not such a healthy dish, mind and, deep fried and very seasoned, you've got crunchy chicken skin as a bonus too. Just wise, cholesterol-wise, not to indulge in too many dishes like this per week. And with those two done we only needed two more dishes to share between a pair  Bravas was the real deal. Two sauces. Lots. Freshly cooked. Nothing to complain about, no need to say more. Chorizo a la sidra was more divisive. The chorizo texture made me think it'd been cooked entirely in the cider, not fried first. Tasty, yes, but some would certainly be less comfortable with a softer, fattier texture. One for the acquired taste file, today.
Friend friendly? As ever with classic bar food, you can find your way through, but expect the usual suspects.
Rating for dating? Well. If you're both keen to go rustic, then for sure. Not a place for candlelight, roses and the big gesture, though.
Tip? Yep,
Change one thing? Yes. Rant alert.  Let's banish the disparaging "old man's bar" term for traditional, family and community-centred places like this. Inclusivity in action deserves inclusivity in kind.
Revisitability? Absolutely, if we're passing. The bravas are a must, and there's lots more to try.
