The Story
Hopes? Smart, creative Mexican dishes and punchy flavours.
Reality? High quality cooking, but we're looking for depth of spice and heat too.
First Impressions? Kind of cosy looking. But a bit concrete bunker in the back room.
USP? Absolutely first class lime & passion fruit cake is going on our HM Recommended list.
The offer in three words? Smart, polished, conservative.
Service? Friendly, helpful and very efficient.
On tap? Bottled beers all the way.
Eat me! Quesadilla Club Mawey is a pretty good start and looks a treat, too. The fried egg on top of the stack means you'd be glad to have this as a brunch dish, and it works excellently as a sharing starter. Chipotle sauce adds a nice smoky element to proceedings. Worth trying.  Tacos de panceta glaseada with chipotle and tamarindo exactly the meaty treats you'd expect from something with tamarind-glaze and pork belly involved. Savoury, rich and with a decent hint of spice, mint was  a surprising garnish, but that herby freshness is welcome. Tacos de suadero con queso oaxaca, salsa de aguacate y tomatillo comes as another attractively presented and well cooked dish, with meat that genuinely melts in the mouth. But this one needs an extra something. The flavours don't take you anywhere new after that first mouthful and it's asking, loudly, for a touch of sauce. And it's not the only one. Tacos Γ‘rabe con adobo de chile pasilla y crema mexicana is another well-cooked dish, presented on its own special - and very filling - corn tortillas. The marinaded meat and creamy sauce go well together, and there's a hint of spice. But we want that hint to grow and add interest, not stay a background note.
Sweet! And just when you think it's all over...you chance on Tarta de lima-maracuya con polvo de frambuesa an utterly superb dish. An acidic custardy cake that manages to feel lighter than its ingredients should really let it be. Those freeze dried raspberries add a fruity dimension and the biscuit base has lots of lime running through it. It's a must-try.
Friend friendly? A smattering of non meat or fish dishes, but emphasis is on animal products for most of the menu.
Rating for dating? That's probably a yes. Tables are a bit closely spaced, but the pairs of tacos lend themselves to pairwork logistics.
Change one thing? Heat and spice. We don't need the food to be oomphed up. But give us a homemade sauce or two to add to taste. The dishes can stand for what they are, but heat can be an option. That's the Mexican way, afterall.
Revisitability? A wristband that means a free margarita before the end of October was a very nice touch. But we're on the hunt for spice and heat, so not sure we'll get to exchange it.
