Fillings, nothing more than...fillings.
Saturday lunchtime, and our objective; A dozen delicious delights in a compact cardboard carton. A treasure chest of Argentinian golden pastries.
And were all our lunch boxes ticked? Well it's going that way. We do need to qualify, but it's a matter of taste, all in all and you're sure to find a few to suit you.
So we'll kick off with our favourites; Empanadas cebolla y queso/cheese & onion, cochinita pibil, carne picante/spicy, cheese burger In order, the first is proper winter comfort eating and I should have ordered two. The second has fantastic filling, with all the juicy sweet meaty savouryness you'd expect. Carne picante has a decent kick to it, and the cheese burger is tasty and amusing at the same time - and I did think about popping to the kitchen for some ketchup to add to it.
Only a short step down, the next two need a little qualification. Empanadas chorizo & queso/cheese is worth a try, but some might find the combination a touch greasy. Roquefort & pera/pear, just for the combination, pretty much shouted Try me!, so we did. Heavy on the blue cheese, the fruit was more texture than flavour. Again, you need to judge in the end.
Something's got to hold up the tower of tastes and for us these were Empanadas humita and chicken/pollo especial. Only fair to make clear that, as I don't like bechamel much, it's on me that I ordered Humita without checking what was actually in it. The sweetcorn was a surprise, though. We were a bit mystified by the chicken. Meat, olives, some added vegetable, but I don't know how, but most of the flavours had got lost somewhere.
Points are awarded for the fillings being burnt into the pastry, everything being filled fully. Pastry is tasty and not at all dry - impressively it holds up well even with potential Stain-risk alert! fillings. A couple of mini wipes and a menu card are nice details although how the promotion offers on the card are applied isn't clear. The packaging is paper-based but sturdy and stylish.
If we're being picky, we'd have liked a couple of sweet options. 12 savoury are plenty to get through. I couldn't find reheating advice had to guess. There's a range of V options, but a spinach & mozzarella or provolone would be very welcome as it's a bit of a classic.
With branches all over the city and home delivery easily done, there's not a lot to stop you giving Malvón a go.
