An evening's dinner at Gayane's does give you a taste of Armenia, with more than a hint of Paris, too. Maybe the most famous French-Armenian crooning on the soundtrack helps with that. Decor is charming, with piles of books offsetting the necessary empty tables and helping keep a welcoming bistro atmosphere.

The menu is determinedly sticking to its Yerevan origins. A yoghurt and cheese starter is tasty, seasoned with garlic and dill and garnished with acidic pomegranate for balance with four flatbreads added. At €20, it's hardly a lo-cost option, mind.

Main courses include excellent kachapuri, accompanied by a delicious saffron-chilli seasoning and a pickled chilli (at cost) that again balances the cheese-butter-egg of the filling. The pastry is absolutely first class and, as with our visit to Madrid's Georgian restaurant, the big K is not merely recommended, it's essential to try it. It's pricier here, unless you happen on a discount, but it's the only thing we know that out-pizzas the best pizza.

Less successful for us, despite more accompaniments were Vard Cordero - steamed lamb-filled pastries. A giant portion, half a dozen of these could easily feed three. They're big. They're filling, and truth be told, they're a bit stodgy and greasy. A generous helping of yoghurt sauce helped, but they were fighting a losing battle after the delights of the kachapuri.

Service is aimiable and helpful. The menu's online via QR code. Armenian wines or on offer and a very pleasant white cost us €20.
