Pasteleria Portuguesa, Callao

€1.80 each

Supposedly the real deal, these feel pretty pricey for the - authentic - size and it's not a spot you'll want to linger long to eat them. Always popular with Portuguese tourists. Although not sure that's such a surprising event here in tourist central.

Maybe 50% bigger than the others we've been trying, these are worth a look in for. They might be bigger than the authentic sizes elsewhere, but they're also much nearer the taste and consistency you'd hope for in Lusitania. ML is recommended stop in the market with friendly service and plenty of other goodies on offer, too.

A much yellower and less blasted or charred confection from one of the mainstays of Rastro Street cafeland. A creamy one this. You can feel the eggyolks that have gone into it.

Mercadona

Bakery counter, 75c/100g of products - 50g per tart.

We're guessing these might be cooked from frozen or something, but they're not at all bad. A little smaller, a little less custardy in flavour than some of the others, but they easily win on value for money and convenience factor.
