In Depth
Speciality ice lollies. A tiramisu takeaway. Flavoured popcorns. A cereal cafe. The hot dog emporium. What next in the Malasaña-Triball jungle? An artesan trifle boutique? With savoury options, natch. Scrambled Egg and Bacon Jam trifle? With Ketchup topping? Howsabout a Crumblería? With dairy-free flavoured custard, of course? Roast lamb crumble with mint sauce gravy custard? Could 'appen. There's a place we know does chorizo crumble. Seriously.

We shouldn't scoff.

Not if places are so good all you'll want to do is...scoff.

So, here's a turn up. Just round the corner from some of Malasaña's hippest 'n' happeningest spots, what should we get, but a doughnut bar selling terrific treats.

Really. They're that good. And all V-friendly. In fact, V-designed.

Delish, Vegan doughnuts.
We had a selection of six, which easily satisfied five as a Saturday afternoon dessert. Apple and cinnamon and a banana and peanut worked terrifically. Peanut and chocolate nearly floored us all. A blackberry and cream cheese-that-wasn't had a nice acidic touch to it.

If we're going to be as picky as can be, more fruity options (say a classic British-style raspberry jam filled one, or something with blueberry) would have us leaping about and hurrying back in a trice. There's an - understandable - bias towards the peanut, with the occasioanl guest pistachio. And as this is still a cottage business, the selection on offer isn't enormous. 7 flavours on the day we went in with a dozen of each on display. Perhaps there's a back up supply, but we didn't ask.

The shop's nice too, with simple decor and a few plants scattered about. The selection of flavours, sitting on wire racks on a high bench in front of the punters looks great, but we'd be happier if they were under glass. They'd look just as smart, and it'd give the server somewhere to put your purchases and change. 2018 update:happily, the products are now shown off in a very smart glass counter.

But we have no complaints. They aren't cheap, so think of them as like slices of quality cake and the prices are reasonable.

As a dessert, picnic or afternoon tea option to suit all ethical or diet tastes, pastry explorers - shall we call them doughnauts? - simply can't go wrong.

Absolutely recommended without reservation.
